About Bonnie Silva, Author of Fifteen Legs

As a professional writer and award-winning producer, Bonnie Silva has dedicated her career to educating the public and helping to create positive social change. Inspired by primatologist Jane Goodall and feature film director Carroll Ballard, Silva's work spans the media spectrum to include magazine articles, television scripts, public service campaigns, documentary films and most recently, a book.

Born in Winchester, Mass., Silva began her career in the communications industry at Emerson College, a four-year university devoted exclusively to the study of communication and performing arts. After graduating from Emerson with a bachelor's degree in mass communications, Silva attended Tufts University where she earned a graduate certificate in management from the Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning Department.

Since completing her college education, Silva has made a name for herself in the broadcast industry. She won a National Education Association Award for the Advancement of Learning through Broadcasting, and served as creator, writer and producer for an Emmy award-winning public service campaign titled "It's An Honor," which featured retired U.S. Army General Norman Schwarzkopf. Silva is also a two-time winner of the CINE Golden Eagle and CINDY Gold awards, prestigious accolades honoring excellence in documentary film and video production.

Silva has authored several articles that have appeared in publications such as Natural Life magazine, Life Learning Magazine and Home Education Magazine. Recently, she fulfilled one of her lifelong dreams when she wrote a script that aired on the Discovery Channel.

Combining her love for animals and passion to make a positive impact, Silva's latest project brought her into the relatively unknown world of animal rescue and transport. Silva spent two years traveling alongside a band of animal rescuers who volunteer to drive cross-country excursions to save last-chance animals and deliver them into loving homes and safe houses.

The project, titled Fifteen Legs, began as a documentary film, but upon completing her in-depth journey, Silva had collected a wealth of heartwarming transport stories. Because the scope of her stories could not fit within the confines of the documentary, Silva decided to write a book to accompany the project. Silva teamed up with Riverbank Press to create Fifteen Legs: When all that stands between death and freedom is a ride (December 2007, $22.95, ISBN 978-0-9728991-1-6).

Silva currently resides with her adopted dog on the North Shore of Massachusetts, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Great Marsh. During the last four years, Silva was the primary caretaker of a laminitis-stricken Paso Fino horse named Rose, who died unexpectedly in February 2007.
